Kerala’s actors line up for the Golf GTI as Volkswagen’s ₹52.99 lakh hot hatch hits Indian roads

From Mammootty to Jayasurya, the performance hatchback finds celebrity favour in a state that’s long loved Volkswagens

Volkswagen’s Golf GTI has officially landed in India, and the first lot of 150 cars is already sold out. While enthusiasts across the country are finally getting their hands on the much-awaited hot hatch, Kerala’s response stands out—not just for the numbers, but for the names behind the wheel.

In a scene that blends performance cars with cinema, several Malayalam film actors have taken delivery of the new Golf GTI. Jayasurya was recently spotted receiving his car, reportedly in the Moonstone Grey Black finish, at a local dealership. Fahadh Faasil, Joju George, and Mammootty are also said to have picked up the GTI, adding more star power to the launch. Mammootty already owned an earlier generation of the GTI and appears to be continuing the tradition. Madhav Suresh, son of actor and MP Suresh Gopi, is among the new owners as well.

Over 25 GTIs already sold in Kerala

Out of the 150 Golf GTIs brought into the country, more than 25 have reportedly been purchased in Kerala alone—a striking figure considering the state’s population and market size. It reflects Kerala’s long-standing affection for the Volkswagen brand, with previous models like the Virtus and Taigun also receiving strong support.

Several videos and images of GTI deliveries across Kerala have surfaced online, especially from premium dealerships in cities like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. While the actors’ purchases have drawn attention, regular buyers too have been flocking to showrooms to collect their dream hatchbacks.

A hot hatch with a premium price tag

Launched at ₹52.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Golf GTI is a four-door hot hatch brought to India as a completely built unit (CBU). That price point makes it the most expensive hatchback currently available in the country.

The car runs on a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 265 PS and 370 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. It offers a front-wheel-drive setup and clocks 0–100 kph in 5.9 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 250 kmph.

In terms of features, Volkswagen has added a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-speaker audio system, push-button start/stop, and advanced systems like progressive steering, dynamic chassis control, and electronic front-axle differential lock.

Demand is strong, but what happens next?

Volkswagen has already confirmed that the first lot of GTIs has been spoken for. Whether the same level of enthusiasm continues into the next batch is unclear. In the past, demand for older GTI models saw an initial rush but eventually tapered off, with units being sold at heavy discounts.

Still, Kerala’s early response shows a market segment ready to spend big on performance and design, especially when the badge comes with European credibility and pop culture buzz. For Volkswagen, the Golf GTI may remain a niche product in India, but in places like Kerala—where a celebrity car delivery goes viral in minutes—it might just carve out a dedicated fan base once again.
